Global payment services processor The Western Union Company has expanded the availability of its cross-border mobile money transfer service in El Salvador, Central and South America.

The payment service can be availed in the region by subscribing to a mobile money service provided by Tigo, a subsidiary of the telecommunication group Millicom International Cellular.

Western Union and Tigo had offered their payment service in Paraguay earlier this year and are planning to launch the same in Honduras and Guatemala, over the next few months.

The mobile money transfer services are currently available in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Paraguay, the Philippines, Tanzania, El Salvador, Uganda and the US.

As of June 30, 2012, the Western Union, Vigo and Orlandi Valuta branded services were offered through a combined network of nearly 510,000 agent locations in 200 countries and territories.
