SumUp has entered into an agreement to process American Express card payments in all regions, where it has a presence.

Apart from enhancing payment alternatives for merchants in major European markets, the new deal will enable SumUp traders to accept payments from American Express Card holders.

The company said that the agreement would be beneficial for small business, as they will be able to accept payment from nearly all the major card brands without paying any monthly fees.

The mobile payment company expanded its services to merchants in ten European nations, in December 2012.

Commenting on the partnership SumUp CEO Daniel Klein said, "It’s extremely frustrating for a merchant when they miss out on making a sale because they can’t accept the type of card a customer wants to use."

"That’s why we’re delighted that we will be able to process American Express card payments on behalf of our merchants and to the advantage of American Express’ thriving and deeply loyal customer base."

SumUp, which is certified by Europay, MasterCard, and Visa (EMV) compliant and PCI-DSS, only charges a fee of 2.75% for every transaction carried out through its card reader, and the same is applicable for American Express, Visa and MasterCard.

Set up in 2011, the company has a workforce of 140 staff and operates offices in Berlin, London, Dublin, Madrid, Milan and Amsterdam.
