Spanish banking group Santander is planning to hire 6,000 new staff over the next year or two as part of its plans to expand business in the UK.

According to The Financial Times, the recruitment drive comes as other British retail banks also have accelerated hiring of frontline employees.

Last month, Santander announced its plan to create 600 new jobs within the next 12 months, to improve its poor customer service.

This is in addition to the 5,000 employees Santander inherited from Royal Bank of Scotland after its acquisition last month.

Santander currently employs 22,000 people.
