National Australia Bank could send about 100 credit card processing jobs to an offshore center as it attempts to cut down on costs, according to a report in the Australian press.

The bank is considering outsourcing some work, possibly to India, The Australian newspaper has reported. A NAB spokesman said that the bank has invited global suppliers to submit tenders for the project and added that all affected staff had been briefed.

What we are doing is testing the market and it will be some months before we examine the proposals, but our approach would be to redeploy any affected staff if the project proceeds, the spokesman was quoted as saying. Customer data, he said, would always remain in Australia.

NAB started a pilot program last October involving 24 accounts payable staff in Bangalore. The spokesman told the newspaper that the pilot was going well and that there were no plans to bring the jobs back onshore.
