The UK government is funding a two year GBP45 million program to help thousands of people struggling with debt by recruiting up to 500 debt advisers.

The Citizens Advice charity has been awarded a total of GBP33 million to train 370 specialist debt advisers. Other similar organizations which targeted specific areas or social groups were also awarded grants, according to the government. While debt advice is currently available through telephone helplines and websites, many people prefer face-to-face advice.

Trade and Industry Secretary Alan Johnson said: This GBP45 million boost to provide more free face-to-face debt advice is vital to help ensure more people with severe debts have access to the right advice when they need it.

Citizens Advice chief executive David Harker said that he was absolutely thrilled by the news. He added: It means that a new generation of debt advisers will be able to help tens of thousands more people overcome serious debt problems. We are especially pleased that the Citizens Advice service will be a leading partner in helping the Government deliver its objectives on financial inclusion. This is a big challenge, but we believe we are ready and able to meet it.
