Monitise Americas, a mobile banking and payments provider, is set to launch a mobile banking application for Google Android phones.

Monitise said that a full range of account management, payment and commerce services will be available on the new Android application. The Monitise Android application will be powered by a secure mobile money manager platform.

Neil Sentance, vice president of wireless business development at Monitise, said: “Android is going to be big, and we will look to capitalize on its excellent customer experience capabilities, such as social networking. Soon, when Android owners are chatting to a friend on Facebook, for example, they might use their mobile to send them the money they owe from a night out.”

Alastair Lukies, chief executive of Monitise, said: “We are seeing a sharp rise in the use of mobile banking services globally as consumers take even more personal interest in and ownership of their money management. Combine this with the fantastic user experience that new devices like Android phones provide, and we are seeing the inevitable step change in the mobile banking and payments landscape.”
