MBNA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bank of America, has expanded the online credit card activation service by enabling all of its customers and holders of affinity partner cards provided by MBNA to activate their credit cards online.

The service will allow all the UK and Ireland credit card customers to have a choice of channels when activating new, replacement or re-issued MBNA credit cards.

Since 2008, customers were allowed to activate credit cards online. However, the service was limited to re-issued cards only.

Bank of America Europe Card Services Customer Service and Channel Fulfilment executive Ian Craig said that the majority of new accounts are applied for online; so, for many, it is the right channel to offer more.

“We’ve expanded the scope to activate our cards as it’s quite right that we offer them the freedom to service their account via their channel of choice,” Craig said.

Bank of America Europe Card Services operates under the MBNA brand in the UK and Ireland.
