Malaysian lender Maybank has launched M2U Mobile, a mobile banking service in conjunction with mobile phone service provider Celcom.

M2U Mobile will allow customers who subscribe to Celcom’s GPRS/3G services to make balance enquiries, fund transfers and bill payments from their phone. Maybank claims that M2UMobile is the country’s first comprehensive mobile financial service and is a radical departure from the SMS method.

Datuk Johar, Maybank’s COO, said: M2U Mobile leverages on technology and advanced applications to provide secure, quick and convenient access to a range of financial services via smart mobile phones. The enhanced functionality and high quality visual display of mobile phones today has enabled us to provide a ‘mini Maybank2u’ on these phones.

The service will cost customers RM3 a month, for which they also receive financial news and a financial calculator. The bank is also running a contest to win Motorola phones to promote the new service.
