UK cash machine network operator Link has given two fee-charging ATM companies 10 days in which to bring their non-compliant cash machines into line or face disconnection from the network.

In a recent survey of ATMs, Link found that some Travelex and TRM machines were found to break the rules relating to fee-charging cash machines. Since July last year, all machines that charge a fee for withdrawing cash must display three warnings: one on the machine, one on the screen before the card is inserted and one before the transaction is completed. Fines of GBP250 will be levied on each non-compliant machine.

Under Link rules, members found non-compliant are now obliged to provide evidence of compliance within 10 working days, or will be asked to disconnect the non-compliant machines from the Link network. Compliance with Link rules is a condition of continued membership.

Edwin Latter, Link’s ATM scheme director, said: The Link ATM scheme is committed to full transparency of charges at cash machines that surcharge. Link will continue to police and enforce compliance with these rules.

Kevin Waterhouse, managing director of TRM, told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: Out of 4,000 ATMs only two failed and both were due to vandalism. Both were corrected within 12 hours of us finding out. We have since instructed all our stores and customers to let us know as soon as something happens.
