Fortis Bank in the Netherlands has appointed Jan van Rutte as chairman, taking over from Kee Beuving who is stepping down after 14 years with the bank.

The Dutch-Belgium lender said that Mr Rutte, currently vice-chairman, will take the role from October 1. Herman Verwilst, deputy CEO of Fortis, said: Jan’s broad expertise makes him the best person for the job: we are confident that he will help us to achieve our goals for Fortis Bank in the Netherlands for the coming years.

Mr Rutte joined Pierson, Heldring & Pierson, one of the predecessors of Fortis Bank Nederland, in 1981 as a controller. He became vice-chairman in 2002.

Mr Verwilst also paid tribute to outgoing chairman Mr Beuving. We wish Kees every success as he embarks on a new and very different stage in his life, he said. In his capacity as general manager of Fortis Retail Bank, Kees Beuving will be succeeded by Jeanine Helthuis, 43, currently marketing director at Fortis Retail Bank.
