Citibank has opened a new ATM situated in China's Great Wall area, the first foreign bank ATM installed near the world-renowned landmark.

The Great Wall is one of the world’s most popular sightseeing attractions, attracting many thousands of visitors every year. The attraction is likely to see even more tourist visits in the run up to the 2008 Olympic Games.

The new ATM will offer international cardholders the convenience of accessing cash and banking services while they visit the heritage site. It is hoped that local cardholders will also be able to utilize the ATM once regulations permit, said Citybank in a statement.

In addition to this, Citibank last week revealed that it has entered into a cooperative agreement with 7-Eleven licensee Guang Dong Sai Yi Convenience Stores to install ATM’s in selected 7-Eleven stores in China’s southern region.

Citibank currently has a total of 57 ATM’s in China, including 17 ATM’s in local outlets and 40 offsite ATM’s in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Tianjin. Citibank said that it expects to have 85 ATM’s operating in China by the end of 2006.
