New York based alternative asset manager Carlyle has appointed Joseph Schenk as an operating executive in the global financial services group, to help the company's professionals in the investment process.

In his new consulting role, he will provide guidance in areas ranging from sourcing to acquisition to exit, and advise portfolio company executives on management, operational and growth strategies.

Schenk most recently was the CEO of New York Securities, and before that he worked as CEO of Pali Capital, a boutique investment banking firm that offered financial advisory and brokerage services.

Before Pali Capital, he served at Jefferies in a number of management and leadership positions during his 15 year span, including executive vice president and chief financial officer.

The Carlyle Global Financial Services, which was set up in 2007, invests in management takeovers, growth capital opportunities and strategic minority investments in the financial services sector worldwide.

Currently, the firm has invested in the companies, which include BankUnited, Boston Private, Bank of Butterfield and OzForex.

As of 30 June 2012, Carlyle had $156bn of assets under management in 99 funds and 63 fund of fund vehicles, and operates in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, North America and South America.
