When confronted with difficult decisions relating to issues such as health, finances and career issues, Brits are far more inclined to turn to partners for advice before they will consult a professional, according to research conducted by retail bank Alliance & Leicester.

Of the survey results, the most telling and somewhat worrying, revealed that less than one third of UK adults seek expert advice to discuss their finances, relying instead on the sometimes ill-judged recommendations of partners, friends and family.

The topicality of spiraling consumer debt stimulates even more interest in the results of the research. Alliance & Leicester explained that when it comes to finances, financial review is an option worth considering. According to the company, financial review can help people put their current financial position into perspective and make sensible plans for the future.

As many as one in six said they didn’t seek professional advice about their finances because of the cost of the service. The bank pointed out, however, that many financial institutions, itself included, offer free financial advice.
