Barclays bank has introduced a greener form of banking by launching the first carbon neutral debit card, the Blue Debit Card, in the UK. This new card is currently being sent out to the bank's 11 million debit card users as their current cards expire.

Axalto, a leading card manufacturer that has worked closely with Barclays on the card, sought advice from The Carbon Neutral Company in an attempt to reduce carbon emissions feeding the Greenhouse effect. The process to produce the new carbon neutral debit card therefore reduces the threat of harmful emissions during the manufacturing process.

Brian Cunnington, Barclays’ head of debit cards, said: We are pleased to be able to offer this brand new carbon neutral debit card. It is good news for people who want a greener form of banking and its distinctive blue edge makes it easy to spot in your wallet or purse.

The launch of this carbon neutral card is in line with the bank’s other energy initiatives, which include reducing its energy consumption, increasing its use of renewables, and working towards 100% carbon offsetting for UK operations.
