UK based financial services firm Barclays has hired Jerry del Missier as its new chief operating officer (COO).

In this newly created role, del Missier will work in partnership with the heads of the group’s businesses and functions, leading all operations and information technology activities, including those that are part of support functions.

Del Missier has been co-chief executive of Barclay’s corporate and investment banking division since October 2010.

He will take up his new role immediately, and will remain as part of the bank’s executive committee while chief executive Rich Ricci will lead the company’s corporate and investment banking divsion.

Del Missier joined Barclays in June 1997 from Bankers Trust in London where he had been a senior managing director of derivatives products, responsible for the European business.
