Barclaycard, the UK-based international cards and lending business of Barclays bank, has appointed Paul Fabara as chief operating officer in a move designed to widen its international scope.

Mr Fabara assumes responsibility for Barclaycard’s operating capability around the world. The position is an executive committee appointment reporting to Barclaycard chief executive, Antony Jenkins.

The appointment will be taken up when Mr Fabara joins Barclaycard on August 29 from US card company Alliance Data, where he has been chief operating officer since 2002.

Antony Jenkins commented: Paul has a proven record in delivering world-class card and lending operations. His appointment will enable us to offer our people and our customers the best service, wherever we operate.

This appointment is the latest move as Barclaycard attempts to further its international capability in cards and consumer lending. In 2005, two-thirds of new cards issued by the company were in overseas markets. Barclaycard’s international presence includes businesses in the US, Germany, Spain, Italy, Scandinavia and South Africa. The company hopes to build on this going forward.
